16 free outdoor art events in Rahway this summer


(RAHWAY, NJ) – Rahway, NJ was just named # 2 best small town art scene nationwide by 10Best and USA Today. This summer Rahway will not disappoint, this small City has not missed a beat despite the end of the pandemic. Here are 16 outdoor arts events taking place in Rahway. Grab food at a myriad of top-notch restaurants and dine al fresco while enjoying dancing, music, spoken word, art and more!

1: Culture Crawl Summer Music Series: Paseo – Live music takes place every Friday evening in the Paseo (the lively public space adjacent to 1501 Main Street!) During the months of June, July and August. The music starts at 6.30 p.m. Listen to a great selection of acoustic songbirds! In case of bad weather, the rain date is the following Saturday.

2: Culture Crawl Summer Music Series: Arts District Park – Live shows also take place every alternate Saturday night, starting June 12, in Rahway Arts District Park (the park on the corner of Central Ave and Irving Street). The music starts at 6:00 p.m. Go there to listen to bands of all kinds! In case of bad weather, the rain date is the following Sunday. Concerts run until September 4 with a bonus night on September 11.

3: Baile! Latin music on Cherry Street – During the month of June, Mayor Giacobbe and Rahway City Council brighten up this quaint street with Latin music from 6.30pm as part of their big summer nights.

4: Driving in the movies – During the month of July, Mayor Giacobbe and Rahway City Council bring you Drive In movies at the Hamilton Stage (360 Hamilton Street) starting at dusk as part of their big summer evenings. 5: The mayor’s concert series – The city’s last Big Summer Nights event takes place on Thursdays in August, Mayor Giacobbe and Rahway City Council bring you great music programming on Irving Street in front of the Union County Performing Arts Center. Pull up your garden chair! The festivities move inside the theater in case of rain. August 5 – 7:30 p.m .: The Soul of Broadway with Terron Brooks. First part: Day One; August 12 – 7:30 p.m. En Vogue. First act: Rusty Monks; August 19– 7:30 p.m. Pop 2000 Tour hosted by Lance Bass from * NSYNC

6: Summer Kick Off at Rahway Dance Theater: Master Classes – As part of Rahway’s Culture Crawl Pop Up Dance series June 14-24, take a dance class with the Rahway Dance Theater at Rahway Train Station Plaza. These OUTDOOR LESSONS are at a special rate of $ 5. No experience needed. Hip Hop- Jazz- African- Contemporary- Ballet lessons for children and adults! For more information, email them here.

7: First performance of “Remember Me” by ReFrame Dance Theater – As part of Rahway’s Culture Crawl Pop Up series, Remember Me is a world premiere dance night by RFDT Artistic Director Nathan Forster (in collaboration with dancers), Bailey Benoot and Charly Santigado. Showing at Rahway Arts District Park (corner of Irving and Central in Rahway) June 18-20 at 7 p.m., this series will include a presentation by the artist after the performance on Saturday.

8: Pride Deep House Music Dance Party – Join Mayor Giacobbe, Rahway City Council and Union County Commissioners in celebrating Pride Month on Cherry Street with outdoor dance parties. The first on June 12th was awesome so don’t miss the second on Saturday June 26th from 3pm to 7pm. Express yourself with chalk art, Pride giveaways, and more. Open to everyone !

9: Deep afro house music dance evenings – presented by Mayor Giacobbe and Rahway City Council in conjunction with AB Salute House Meghan Trainor said it best “I Feel Better When I’m Dancing”. Get rid of this crazy year and dance with all your heart! At these Deep Afro House Music dance parties taking place in Station Square, we challenge you to stand still once you hear this beat. 10: Downtown Bohemian Festival Pop Ups – Poetry and Jazz is the third in a series of three. This takes place at the Train Station Plaza on September 4 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with poets and an open mic. The rainy date is the following Saturday September 11. (Watch the second in the series on Saturday, July 17 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in The Gallery Space (1670 Irving St.) with Short Films & Poetry and Open Mic.)

11: Jazz Trax – Saturdays in August, relax with cool jazz during the Jazz Trax series. Organized by Mayor Giacobbe and Rahway City Council in Station Square from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The rainy date is the following Sunday. 12: What’s the word, Rahway? ACP Arts offers you an evening of Poetry Slams, Open Mic and Spoken Word on Friday August 20, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Hosted at Rahway Arts District Park (corner of Central Ave and Irving St.), the rain date is the following Friday August 27 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm More dates to be determined.

13: Derrick Baker and Upwards Entertainment – An afternoon of lively music by Upwards Entertainment at Paseo (the public space adjacent to 1501 Main Street) on Sunday July 25 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

14: Spontaneous pop-up music – The streets of Rahway spontaneously come alive with live music, art and dance as businesses across the neighborhood organize their own art events. For example: The Coffee Box Rahway has regular live music outside on Thursdays and Saturdays.

15: River Fest of the Rahway River Watershed Association – The Rahway River is a vital part of Rahway’s identity and the RRWA takes an entire week to celebrate it! Activities include a river clean-up, storytelling hours, concerts, movies, an evening in the marshes, a kayak and canoe race and much more. 16: Arts and Music Festival of Cultural Exploration – This one-day Arts Day explosion on September 25 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. welcomes artists of all genres throughout downtown Rahway.
