CMT Music Awards 2021: Nominees include Sam Hunt, Little Big Town

Nominees for the 2021 CMT Music Awards were announced Thursday, and three Alabama-related acts were on the list. Here is the breakdown:

Sam hunt, a country-pop singer-songwriter linked to Birmingham and Montevallo, is nominated for Video of the Year for “Breaking Up Was Easy in the 90’s”. The song is a track from her 2020 album, “Southside”.

Hunt was a starting quarterback for the University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers in 2006-2007, and made one of his first public musical performances with the UAB Gospel Choir. Hunt met his wife, former Hannah Lee Fowler, while at UAB. Hunt’s groundbreaking debut album “Montevallo” in 2014 was named after Fowler’s hometown, and his relationship with her sparked many songs on this album.

Small big city, a country-pop group with ties to Sumiton and Birmingham, has three nominations: Duo / Group Video of the Year for “Wine, Beer, Whiskey”; CMT Performance of the Year for “Wine, Beer, Whiskey” at the 2020 CMT Music Awards; and Breakthrough Video of the Year, for their featured spot on Hailey Whitters ‘video for “Fillin’ My Cup”.

Jimi Westbrook, one of the four directors of Little Big Town, is from Sumiton. He sings the lead voice on “Wine, Beer Whiskey”. Two other members of the group, Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman, became friends in Birmingham while studying at Samford University.

Tyler Hubbard, one of the directors of Florida Georgia Line, is nominated for Collaborative Video of the Year, for “Undivided” with Tim McGraw. The song is on the “Ultimate Edition” of McGraw’s 2020 album “Here on Earth”.

Hubbard is from Monroe, Georgia, but his parents, the late Roy Wayne Hubbard and Amy Eady Hubbard, are from Bibb County. Hubbard has other relatives in Tuscaloosa and Centerville.

The final vote for Video of the Year will take place on social media and the winner will be announced as the final category during the live broadcast on CMT.

The ceremony will air simultaneously on MTV, MTV2, Logo, Paramount Network and TV Land, a press release said. Kelsea Ballerini and Kane Brown will host the awards ceremony. Performers, presenters and other details have not been announced.
