A drag show paying homage to singer Selena Quintanilla and Latinx culture will be presented on Sunday, September 19.
The drag show is a tribute to Selena, famous for her role as a Mexican-American musician, starring Gypsy Rose, and will be hosted by Latino Programs and Services, LGBTQ + Programs and the Gender + Equality Center. The tribute is highlighted by Selena’s music, outfits inspired by her and her iconic dance moves.
Gypsy Rose, a drag queen from San Antonio, has dedicated her entire drag career to the musician. Ever since Rose was a child, she loved Selena and her job. With Selena’s influence not only on Rose but also on her family and everyone around her, she said it was an incredible honor to pay tribute to the singer.
“She was the first artist who was… introduced to my family. As a kid, I used to dance and shoot in my living room, ”Gypsy said. “So when I discovered drag, I… decided to pay tribute to it. Not just for myself, but for this little boy who was ashamed to listen to him once.
Quintanilla was also a spokesperson, businesswoman, model and actress in the early 90s. She is nicknamed “Tejano’s Music Queen” and is now one of the most famous Mexican-American artists of modern times. .
Selena’s outfits are considered one of the artist’s most iconic aspects, Rose said. Rose will be wearing outfits similar to those worn by Selena, all handmade by herself. Each outfit has a signature dedicated to Selena.
“I’ve worked a lot… and I just want people to have fun and enjoy the moment. Not just to be there for me, but for Selena and her legacy because that’s who… we celebrate.
The show kicks off at 7 p.m. on Sunday, September 19 at the Molly Shi Ballroom at the Oklahoma Memorial Union. Free entry.
