Inside Eminem and Mariah Carey’s Feud

Eminem is no stranger to feuds with other celebrities. Throughout his career, Marshall Mathers has called out everyone from his family to pop stars to actors to fellow rappers. Even icons aren’t immune to hearing their names drop in his lyrics.

Many fans remember Em rapping about having a relationship with Mariah Carey. The problem with that is that Carey denied anything was going on between them. And from there, a nasty feud arose. Here’s more about their longtime beef and who else got involved.

When Eminem Claimed He Dated Mariah Carey

The feud between the “Rap God” artist and the pop diva dates back to the early 2000s when Em claimed he and Carey dated for six months. In his 2002 song “Superman,” he rapped, “What are you trying to be? My new wife?/What, you Mariah? Cross twice.

Carey, however, denied that they ever had a romantic relationship and years later this prompted Slim Shady to post scathing verses about her and her then-husband Nick Cannon on the track “Bagpipes From Baghdad”. Lyrics include: “Mariah, what happened to us?/Why did we have to break up?/I can’t imagine what’s going through your mind after such a nasty breakup with that Latin dude Luis Miguel/ Nick Cannon *** up / I don’t play, I want her back, you punk… I mean, I really want you hard, you c *** / Nick, you had fun , I came to hit your bag of bric-a-brac.

Carey appeared to accuse the rapper of being “obsessed” with her

Following Em’s tirade, Carey released the single “Obsessed” in which sang, “Oh why you so obsessed with me (boy, I wanna know)/Lie you fucking me (when everybody knows) /It’s clear you’re mad at me/Finally found a girl you couldn’t impress/Last man on earth still couldn’t hit that.

The video for the song shows Carey dressed as a hooded stalker, which everyone assumed was her channeling of Eminem.

The “Stan” rapper fired back by dropping “The Warning” with the graphic lines: “Oh geez, is that supposed to be me? In the video with the goatee? Wow Mariah, I didn’t expect that. Bitch, shut the fuck up before I make all those phone calls you made to my house when you were raging in front of Nick, when you were on my dick and I gave you something to smile on.”

Nick Cannon also responded to Em’s dissertations

Cannon was seriously offended by the insults directed at him and his wife at the time, so he responded with a lengthy blog post.

“A mediocre (at best) Eminem record that sounds like it was written in 2001. At first I thought it was old material that had been dug up from when the dude ‘fantasized’ about ‘having an affair with Mariah,’ Cannon wrote (per Songfacts.com). “But all of a sudden I hear my name in the verse! My first reaction was, ‘Is that his new shit? Wow, that’s a shame. ‘” Of Em constantly dissenting, Carey Cannon said, “I thought we were past the days when white men could spew vulgar obscenities at our beautiful queens and get away with it.”

During an interview with Tim Westwood on BBC Radio 1, Eminem commented while saying, “With the song ‘Bagpipes From Baghdad’ I kinda exploded on that record, but I guess I exploded on every disc. There’s a line on that that was kinda hard. It’s a hard line. But that’s how it is, the way I see it, I had no idea he was going to take it as he took it. I had no idea Nick Cannon was going to unleash on me. No pun intended.”

Em added: “I heard about some of the things he was saying. I haven’t read his blog or anything. But it is what it is… In the end, it is a sentence that I said; it is a song. In fact, I wanted to say: I wish them the best. That’s what I was trying to say.
