Thanks to his hit Netflix series, Luis Miguel broke a record on Spotify. With his music catalog, he is the first Mexican artist to have reached five billion downloads on the streaming platform.
Luis Miguel: the series returned to Netflix for a second season on April 18. Mexican actor and singer Diego Boneta has taken over the lead role of Miguel. In this final season, the series explores Miguel’s later life in the 1990s and 2000s, when his hearing damaged as a result of an audio equipment accident. His romance with Mariah Carey will also be revisited.
Since the return of the series, there has been a resurgence of interest in Miguel’s music. He celebrated his five billion record feeds in an Instagram post. Spotify recognized LuisMi as the first Mexican artist on the platform to achieve this feat. His most played song on Spotify is “Ahora Te Puedes Marchar” from 1987 Soy Como Quiero Ser. His Spanish version of “I Only Want To Be With You” by Dusty Springfield has streamed over 300 million.
Some of Miguel’s other most-listened songs include âLa Incondicionalâ from 1989 by his Busca Una Mujer album. The Ballad has over 254 million streams on Spotify. âCulpable o No (MiÃ©nteme Como Siempre)â, from the same album, follows with 176 million streams. Surprisingly, âLa Chica Del Bikini AzÃºlâ or âCuando Calienta El Solâ are not among Miguel’s 10 most listened songs on Spotify. These classics should nevertheless be broadcast.
El Sol de MÃ©xico is also nominated for Latin American Artist of the Decade at the Pollstar Awards. Usually, the awards show celebrates the best-selling tours of the past year, but that changed when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down most live entertainment in 2020. Mexico Por Siempre album, Miguel had one of the best-selling Latin tours in the U.S. He went on to win Album of the Year at the 2018 Latin Grammy Awards.
