Mariah Carey has been part of several high-profile relationships throughout her career, from her marriages with Tommy Mottola and Nick Cannon to her alliance with Derek Jeter. One relationship in particular was full of extravagant romantic gestures.
Mariah Carey dated “the Latin Elvis”
Carey split from Mottola in 1997, and the following year she began dating Luis Miguel, whom fans affectionately refer to as “the Latin Elvis.” Carey and Miguel dated for three years from 1998 to 2001, with Miguel alongside Carey as she went through the divorce process.
In his memoirs of 2020 The meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer “Emotions” devoted an entire chapter to her Latin ex-lover. She recounted their first date, which was a blind date arranged by friends in Aspen. He made a bad first impression, as he drank to excess and it was an embarrassing experience for both of them. But Carey still saw a future with him.
“He had an undeniable passionate flair; I could see the potential for adventure in him, ”she thought. “He was a genuine lover of exaggerated Latin, for real.”
Luis Miguel treated Mariah Carey like a queen
During their relationship, Miguel took every opportunity to give Carey lavish gifts. Singer Meixcan often brought her to his gorgeous home in Acapulco with real flamingos and a group of mariachis who serenaded them while they had dinner.
“Luis was exciting and extravagant,” she recalls. “We were both Aries and we were vibrating energetically. He was incredibly romantic and spontaneous. We were going on an adventure: abandon security and go for a walk, or pick up and go to Mexico. “
Miguel’s outward displays of affection did not escape Carey; even though they were luxurious, she loved every moment of them.
“Luis did not hold back in his material displays of worship. He once filled a private jet with red roses to surprise me, ”she admitted. “Her dramatic romantic gestures spoke to the eternally twelve girl in me, because they were really like something you’ve seen in the movies.”

Mariah Carey and Luis Miguel finally broke up
Despite their romantic relationship, their chemistry only lasted so long.
“Everything was grand and exciting, but it was far from perfect,” she concluded. “Although we have been a hot couple, it is still difficult to live and love in the limelight.”
She admitted that they both walked into each other’s lives at a difficult time and it had become too difficult for them to support each other.
“We weren’t helping each other heal… After three years, I knew it was time for us to go our separate ways. We had a good course and I still have good memories, but in the end, it was not the right one.
