Music lovers celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by honoring Selena, Queen of Tejano

HARLINGEN, TX (ValleyCentral) – She’s a legendary singer, whose songs like “Como La Flor” and “Bidi bidi bom bom” have touched millions of people.

Selena Quintanilla is known to many as the queen of music, Tejano.

Pandora describes Tejano Music as “one of the most emblematic genres of Mexican regional music, with its distinct bi-cultural flavor that could only have originated in Texas”.

“It’s just music you’ve always heard around your house,” said Daniel Cavazos, from Dallas.

Selena was born in April 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas. But his family moved to Corpus Christi, his current resting place.

She was a rising star in the music industry for her singing style and fashion.

It was in 1995, at the age of 23, that she was shot dead. It was later discovered that his friend, and former manager, would be convicted of his murder.

More than 25 years after his death, his music still inspires people today.

“I’ve been a Selena fan since I was a kid. My friends and I used to do song and dance competitions as Selena,” singer Carymel Rodriguez said.

She is the lead singer of the Selena Forever Tribute Band.

The conductor Esteban Rojas and Rodriguez bring passion and energy to pay homage to the late singer.

“He has a lot of energy. It takes you right away. It catches your eye, ”Rojas said of Selena’s music. “On her voice, I’m only talking about her voice and the man who touched me. I was like, what is it!

The group has toured throughout Texas and recently performed in the town of Elsa.

Selena’s roots in South Texas are strong.

In her hometown of Corpus Christi, her presence and impact are forever remembered. A statue overlooks Corpus Christi Bay. His family created a museum to keep the legacy alive. Both places attract people from all over the world.

If you stop in front of the statue, there are bricks on the floor where fans leave messages of love and admiration.

“I love his music. I feel like his music has a lot of meaning, ”said Veronica Gutierrez, from Valley.

We met McAllen’s native and her daughter in Corpus Christi.

“She follows all the videos and the story on Tiktok. I thought it would be something cute that we could do on a mom and me day,” she said.

While enjoying the legacy Selena left behind, she adds that the way Selena died was sad, but her music will continue to inspire generations.

“Selena left an impact on everyone… She passed away the year I was born. She was one of a kind, very different from the rest, ”she said.

Another popular tourist spot in Corpus Christi is Selena’s final resting place at Seaside Memorial Park.

The tomb is separate, surrounded by flowers and a community that will keep its legacy alive.
