Musical performance shining the spotlight on homelessness in Torbay

A cast of around 100 are set to take the stage for their third ‘Big Homeless Musical’ – raising money for work with ex-homeless and recovering communities in Torbay.

The benefit variety show at the Princess Theater in Torquay is staged by award-winning theater company Unleashed.

Unleashed works closely with recovery and formerly homeless communities in Torbay. So, everyone involved in the writing, improv, and acting on the show are all on the road to recovery themselves.

Unleashed Theater Company has completed its most ambitious project during lockdown, ‘The Rich and The Pure’ – a feature-length costume drama about a scandal that broke in the 1840s and highlighted the gap between the rich and the poor in Torbay as it grew and developed into the wealthier seaside resort.

The film was then nominated for Best Short Film at the London Shorts Film Festival and then won Best Original Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival.

Then, after being approached by Merlin Cinemas, they secured funding to buy Torbay’s oldest theater – the Royal Lyceum, the former Central Cinema, which was built in the 1860s and moved into the building as their base in May.

The company runs two theater groups and two choirs and has a long reputation for producing high quality performances often with a message about many issues related to addiction, homelessness and austerity.

This month, Unleashed Theater Company presents its third Big Homeless musical “Under One Roof 3” at the Princess Theater.

On Sunday 16 October, the Night of Music and Comedy will feature plays written and produced by both theater companies and hopes to shine a spotlight on the whole issue of homelessness in Torbay.

Martin Harris, Artistic Director of Unleashed Theater Company, said: “The community event features a live band and music from The Unleashed Community Choir and the new Unleashed Community Youth Choir.

“Raising funds for their work with ex-homeless and recovering communities in Torbay, the show features almost 100 performers performing offbeat comedy and music from Elton John, Mike and The Mechanics as well as songs shows Cher Evan Hansen, Tick, Tick, Boom, Sister Act, Waitress, Les Miserables and Prince of Egypt.

“Hilarious, heartwarming and thought-provoking, Unleashed aims to fill the theater with like-minded people who care about improving our community and truly helping people who are struggling get back on their feet.”
