Popular La Cocina chefs sell food at a new pop-up store in San Francisco

Fans of the non-profit La Cocina can now purchase packaged goods like chocolates, sauces and teas made by their favorite La Cocina entrepreneurs at a new pop-up store in San Francisco’s Ghirardelli Square.

After bouncing between spaces during the pandemic, La Cocina moved into the former BBQ Pub space at 900 North Point St., Suite 301. Jamestown Properties, owner of Ghirardelli Square, offered the vacant restaurant space until ‘at the end of August. With the arrival of a new tenant, La Cocina will then move to another location in Ghirardelli Square, the former Wattle Creek Winery tasting room at 900 North Point St., Suite 211, from September 1 until the end of the year.

While La Cocina moved to Ghirardelli Square earlier this year, the pop-up store only recently started allowing customers to shop. The retail effort coincides with La Cocina’s newly opened food court in the Tenderloin, where six vendors cook lunch on weekdays.

The pop-up shop sells packaged items from well-known and up-and-coming names from La Cocina. There are baobab bars by Nafy Flatley, who operates Teranga at the food hall; crunchy with black sesame seeds and other confectionery from the Christine Doerr chocolate maker of NeoCocoa; alfajores with dulce de leche from Guisell Osorio from Sabores del Sur; and Malaysian tea and peanut sauces from Azalina Eusope, who recently closed Noe Valley Mahila restaurant.

It’s also a place for these entrepreneurs – mostly low-income women, immigrants, and people of color – to sell new items, such as caramel biscotti from NeoCocoa and chocolate-coated cricket kits from Monica Martinez. . snack company based Don Bugito.

The association hopes to expand its offering soon by adding a refrigerator and organizing pop-up events with entrepreneurs. The store’s future move to the former Wattle Creek space could also allow it to stock baked goods, according to Cynthia Solis Yi, director of La Cocina. Think Indonesian egg layered cakes from 1000 Layer Bakery, ube donuts from Buko Bakes, and classic cookies from A Girl Named Pinky.

La Cocina has been looking for a permanent commercial space for a long time. Starting in fall 2019, it went from a tiny kiosk in the Ferry Building to a temporary location across the street at 1 Market St. to the Indian restaurant Besharam in Potrero Hill. During the pandemic, La Cocina’s retail business mainly focused on pre-ordered gift boxes.

“We have been in survival mode and very cost conscious, unaware of people’s appetites to shop in person. It’s hard to get a long-term lease, ”Yi said. “I was really happy and I feel really lucky to have a partner who wants to support us in this area. “

With a new tenant set to take over pub space and La Cocina soon until 2021, the generally tourist-oriented Ghirardelli Square is steadily attracting more restaurants aimed at locals like the dim sum destination Palette Tea House. and the just opened Latin American restaurant Barrio.
