Sugababes star Jade Ewen has completely transformed into pop icon Mariah Carey, making her debut in a new trailer for the Netflix series Luis Miguel.
The 33-year-old British singer is set to play the We Belong Together hitmaker in the drama’s third season, which focuses on the life story of Mexican singer Luis who dated Mariah in real life in the 1990s.
In a new teaser clip shared this week, Jade is seen in the character of Mariah for the first time.
She has an affectionate exchange with Luis, telling him, “You are very sure of yourself,” to which he raised his eyebrows insolently. In the following clip, they share a passionate kiss on the dance floor.
This is the first time many see Jade as an actress, having first come to know her as a member of British pop group Sugababes in the 2000s.
“Wow that’s huge, so happy for you,” one subscriber applauded as he reacted to the trailer.
Another fan said, “Excellent good luck with the show, I think you’re going to do a great job, good luck.”
“I hope this role will remain respectful to the MC Queen and bring you everything you ever wanted,” added another.
After some criticism from the cast, one of them joked, “I’m sure Mariah would have been happy to play herself.”
Others were more willing to give Jade the chance to prove herself, with one supporter intervening: “Give the girl a chance, folks.”
The series’ first season in Spanish began with Luis at the age of 10, while the third and final season will follow the musician’s relationship with Mariah between 1999 and 2001.
Diego Boneta will reprise the role of Luis.
In August, Jade shared her excitement about playing the role, writing in an Instagram post, “It’s not every day that you get the chance to play your idol. No words … just one infinite gratitude !!! ‘
The series was filmed in Mexico last year, and Jade appeared to be preparing for the role in November while reading the book The Meaning Of Mariah Carey.
The singer first rose to fame by representing the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009, singing It’s My Time accompanied by Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber on the piano.
She finished fifth in the competition, making her the most successful British actor at Eurovision Song Contest since 2002.
Months later, she joined the revolving door of Sugababes, replacing the last remaining founding member Keisha Buchanan to complete the training with Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah.
