The Weeknd Wins Big at Billboard Music Awards

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – It was a big day for The Weeknd, who was named Best Artist at the Billboard Music Awards.

The Weeknd had carried 16 top nominations on the show and had already won seven awards by the time the off-air winners were announced on Sunday. The Weeknd won Best Male Artist, Best Radio Song Artist, Best R&B Artist, Best R&B Male Artist, Best R&B Album, Best Radio Song and Best R&B Song.

He made headlines earlier this year when – despite being considered a big favorite – he was completely ignored by the Recording Academy and received no Grammy nominations. But he’s seeking revenge with the Billboard Music Awards, which will be presented at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles in a ceremony hosted by Nick Jonas.

The Weeknd’s 16 nominations easily led all performers, with DaBaby a distant second with 11 nods, Pop Smoke with 10 and Gabby Barrett with nine.

Pop Smoke, who was fatally shot at age 20 in the Hollywood Hills in February 2020, was named Best New Artist, Best Rap Artist and Best Male Rap Artist at today’s Billboard Music Awards, while his “Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon” won best rap album.

The Weeknd and Pop Smoke were both nominated for Best Artist, along with Drake, Juice WRLD and Taylor Swift. The nomination for Juice WRLD is also posthumous. He died of a drug-related crisis at the age of 21 in December 2019.

The Weeknd, Pop Smoke, Juice WRLD, Drake, and Lil Baby were all nominated for Best Male Artist. Swift won for Best Female Artist, beating Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion.

The awards are based on the ranking period of March 21, 2020 to April 3, 2021. Nominees and winners are chosen “based on key fan interactions with music, including digital album and song sales, streaming, radio broadcasting and social engagement ”. ‘

Country singer Morgan Wallen, who has been criticized and widely rejected by the music industry after being filmed using racial epithets, had several nominations in the country categories and won the award for best country album, from the best country artist, best country male artist. The nominations prompted the awards sponsor Dick Clark Productions to issue a statement saying the nominations were based on “charts.”

“Because his recent conduct does not align with our core values, we will not include him on the show in any capacity – playing, presenting, accepting,” according to the company. “It is heartwarming and encouraging to hear that Morgan is taking action on his anti-racism journey and starting to do meaningful work. We plan to assess his progress and will consider his participation in future shows. ”

The Weeknd will be among those performing at the event, with Pink, Alicia Keys, Bad Bunny, BTS, AJR, DJ Khaled with HER and Migos, Duran Duran, Twenty-One Pilots, Glass Animals, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis with sounds of Blackness and Ann Nesby, Karol G, Doja Kat and SZA.

Pink will also receive the “Icon Award,” which recognizes artists “who have achieved excellence on the Billboard charts and made an indelible mark on the music itself.” Drake will receive the ‘Artist of the Decade’ award, which is based on ‘activity on the Billboard Hot 100 song chart and Billboard 200 album count, as well as social media data and touring revenue from Billboard Boxscore ”over the past decade. Rapper / activist Trae Tha Truth will receive the Billboard Change Maker Award, which “honors the artist or band who speaks the truth to power through their music, fame and community.”
